Adam W. Chase has joined the Boulder law firm Hutchinson Black and Cook, LLC, of counsel. Adam brings to HBC over 15 years of experience in tax law with a focus in state and local sales and use tax for Colorado and Louisiana. He is the author of Colorado Sales & Use Taxation: The Complete State & Local Reference, is a regular lecturer and author in the area of tax law.
Bill Meyer lectures at International Lawyers’ Conference
Karen Mathis, immediate past President of the American Bar Association, and Bill Meyer of Hutchinson Black and Cook, recently returned from Damascus, Syria, where they spoke at the First International Lawyers’ Conference and met with President Bashar Assad to discuss potential reforms in the Syrian judicial and legal systems.
CU and Lisa Simpson Settle 5-year Litigation
Baine Kerr, a partner of the firm, is pleased to announce the settlement of the Title IX litigation case between his client, Lisa Simpson, and the University of Colorado. The settlement was finalized after the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the District Court's ruling in favor of the University and returned the case for trial. The settlement includes a $2.5 million payment and the appointment of an independent adviser to monitor Title IX compliance and an additional part-time counselor who will work in CU's Office of Victim's Assistance. HBC partners Baine Kerr, Kimberly Hult and Chris Ford led the team responsible for this historic outcome.

HBC is pleased to welcome Angela Little as an associate attorney with the firm. Prior to joining HBC, Angela was a senior litigation associate for Smith Moore LLP, in its Greensboro, North Carolina office. Angela is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating Order of the Coif. Angela also received a B.A. degree in English from the College of William and Mary. Before attending law school, Angela served in the Peace Corps as a teacher of English language and literature in Tutume, Botswana. Angela's practice will continue to emphasize complex civil litigation matters.

HBC Welcomes Justin Konrad and Melissa Sullivan as New Associate Attorneys
HBC is pleased to welcome two new associates, Justin Konrad and Melissa Sullivan to the firm. Justin is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law, graduating in the top 2% of his class, and was a Casenote and Comment Editor for the University of Colorado Law Review. Justin attended Harvard University where he received his B.A. in Philosophy. Prior to starting with HBC, Justin served as a judicial clerk for the Hon. David Ebel, Senior Judge for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Justin's practice will focus on business and transactional matters. Melissa finished first in her class at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and served as an Articles Editor for the University of Denver Law Review. She received a B.S. degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from Temple University and, prior to law school, Melissa taught high school mathematics in South Carolina and Illinois, and she also worked with students learning English as a second language. Melissa's practice will encompass both litigation and transactional matters.

Bill Meyer selected to receive the American Bar Association's Rule of Law Award
Bill Meyer was selected to receive the Rule of Law Award from the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ROLI) for his significant international pro bono work with Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (CEELI) and other ABA sponsored groups. Bill will receive the award at a dinner in San Francisco in August. He will share the podium with the co-awardee, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
Chris Ford appointed to the Board of The Colorado Legal Aid Foundation and name Co-Chair of the Boulder County Campaign
Chris Ford has been appointed as a Trustee to serve on the Board of Trustees for The Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado and has been named a Co-Chair of the Boulder County Campaign. The Colorado Legal Aid Foundation works to increase and diversify funding to support civil legal services for Colorado's poor and disadvantaged people. By raising private funds for legal services, the Foundation works to ensure that Colorado's low-income population receives the civil legal assistance they need.

Baine Kerr to speak at Harvard Law School Title IX Conference
Baine Kerr is a member of a distinguished panel speaking at Harvard Law School's Conference on Title IX and Sexual Harassment on April 13, 2007. Baine will speak on the expanding uses of Title IX in litigation. Other panelists include law school professors, basketball great Nancy Lieberman, coaches, and ESPN commentators.

Connie Eyster to teach at University of Colorado School of Law
Adding to her normally busy practice, Connie Eyster will teach the Wills and Trusts course at the Wolf Law Building at the University of Colorado School of Law this Fall. The course will cover topics such as intestate succession, capacity to execute a will, formality of will execution, nonprobate transfers, and creation and administration of trusts. Connie is looking forward to her first semester as an adjunct professor.
Bill Meyer wins domain name dispute before WIPO in Geneva
In proceedings before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Bill Meyer successfully defended our client against a claim seeking transfer of the client’s domain name to the complainant. Bill established, and the WIPO Panel found, (a) that the complainant had no protectable trademark rights in the domain name; (b) that our client had established rights or legitimate interests in that name; and (c) that our client did not register and uses the name in bad faith. Bill Meyer receives first-ever Life Member Award from ILAC
At its recent Annual Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) named Bill Meyer of Hutchinson Black and Cook, LLC as its first individual Life Member for his work in promoting the rule of law throughout the world. Based in Stockholm, ILAC is a consortium of 35 multinational and national bar associations and non-governmental organizations with more than three million members, devoted to providing technical legal assistance in post-conflict situations. In making this first-ever award, Paul Hoddinott, Chairman of the ILAC Council, cited Mr. Meyer's pioneer work in developing structures for international cooperation in post-conflict situations ranging from Iraq to Liberia to Haiti.
